Understand and Utilize EDGAR CIKs, Passphrases, and Access Codes
Filers are responsible for securely maintaining their EDGAR access codes.
If filers lose or forget their access codes, they must generate replacements through EDGAR. See How Do I Manage the CIK Confirmation Code (CCC).
Unenrolled filers may consult How Do I Update the EDGAR Passphrase and CCC to Enroll (and Avoid the Need to Submit Form ID).
SEC staff do not have filers’ access codes, and filers should not contact Filer Support to obtain access codes. Nor should filers include their access codes in emails to SEC staff.

CIK
The CIK is a unique, publicly available number that EDGAR assigns to identify each filer account. It is a permanent identifier: it may not be changed and never expires. It is used with the CCC to file on EDGAR.
The CIK is assigned regardless of whether filings are made electronically on EDGAR or submitted to the SEC in paper.
If filers have forgotten, misplaced, or want to confirm their CIK, they may look it up by searching for their company name on EDGAR company search.
CCC
The CIK confirmation code (CCC) is a unique code that each filer needs to enroll in EDGAR Next, make filings, and retrieve and edit the filer’s data on EDGAR.
- Individuals with permission to make filings for a filer can view the CCC on the dashboard of the EDGAR Filer Management website.
- The CCC is exactly eight (8) characters, consisting of at least one number (0-9) and at least one special character (such as @, #, $, *, etc.). Letters are case-sensitive (upper or lower case). To minimize errors, avoid using the number 1 (one), the lower case letter “l” (el), the number 0 (zero), and the capital letter O (oh).
- If Form ID is granted, EDGAR automatically generates the CCC and sends it to the filer.
- The CCC can be changed by the filer at any time on the dashboard. See How Do I Manage the CIK Confirmation Code (CCC).
- The CCC automatically resets upon enrollment. The new CCC will display on the dashboard and the account administrator may then customize the CCC. See How Do I Manage the CIK Confirmation Code (CCC).
- While the CCC never expires, a filer should change the CCC immediately if it suspects that the CCC may have been compromised and periodically as a routine security practice.
- To generate a new or replacement CCC, see How Do I Manage the CIK Confirmation Code (CCC).
Passphrase
The passphrase continues to be used by EDGAR only in order to enroll a filer in EDGAR Next. Once a filer has enrolled in EDGAR Next, the filer no longer needs its passphrase. EDGAR will discontinue use of the passphrase entirely after December 19, 2025.
If an unenrolled filer has lost or forgotten its passphrase, or if it is unsure that the passphrase is current for enrollment, an unenrolled filer can obtain a new passphrase through December 19, 2025 by requesting a passphrase reset token be sent to the filer’s EDGAR point of contact (EDGAR POC) email address. See How Do I Update the Passphrase and CCC to Enroll (and Avoid the Need to Submit Form ID).
- Unenrolled filers can no longer change the EDGAR POC email address on EDGAR. If an unenrolled filer cannot access the current EDGAR POC email address, but the filer’s filing agent can access it, the filing agent may reset the filer’s passphrase with the filer’s authorization.
- If neither the unenrolled filer nor its filing agent has the filer’s current passphrase or can access the EDGAR POC email to reset the passphrase, the unenrolled filer must submit Form ID to regain access to its EDGAR account. Consult How Do I Prepare and Submit My Form ID Application for instructions regarding applying for access for an existing EDGAR account and for current average Form ID processing times.
Discontinued Codes—Password and PMAC
The password, previously used to log into EDGAR filing websites, and the PMAC, previously used to change the password, have been discontinued as of September 15, 2025.
