Understand, Select and Set a Default Login CIK

What is a Login CIK?

A “login CIK” is the Central Index Key (CIK) account number that an individual enters when logging into the EDGAR Filing or EDGAR Online Forms website. The login CIK is reflected in the first 10 digits of the accession number that EDGAR provides to a filer for each submission made while logged in with that CIK.

  • The CIK may belong to the filer itself or to a filing agent of the filer so long as the individual logging in has permissions for the CIK.
  • To illustrate, in the hypothetical accession number 0001193125-25-000006 provided to a filer for a submission made on EDGAR:
    • The first 10 digits (0001193125) are the login CIK—the CIK of the filer submitting the filing. The CIK could be that of a company or individual filer or a third-party filing agent.
    • The next 2 digits of the accession number (25) represent the year.
    • The last series of digits in the accession number comprise a sequential count of submitted filings from that CIK. The count is usually, but not always, reset to 0 at the start of each calendar year.

If an individual has roles for multiple EDGAR filers, then the individual should ensure that they use as the login CIK the particular CIK account number that they want to be displayed in the accession number for the filing.

The filer can manage the login CIK selection for the filing and can also set a default login CIK for all future filings the individual makes.

  • If an individual only has a role for one EDGAR filer, then that filer’s EDGAR CIK account number will be reflected in the accession number for any filing the individual makes. The individual does not need to select a login CIK.
  • The option to select or change a login CIK is available so individuals with roles for multiple EDGAR filers can insert the CIK to be reflected in the accession number.

Select or Change a Login CIK

When an individual logs into the EDGAR Filing or EDGAR Online Forms website, the individual will see their current login CIK, if selected, and the option to change the CIK to any filer for which the individual has a role in EDGAR.

  • If the individual is only associated with one filer in EDGAR, then the individual will not see an option to select a login CIK because the choice of a login CIK is only relevant to individuals with roles for multiple filers.

If you have roles for multiple filers, you must select a login CIK before you proceed:

  1. Log into the EDGAR Filing or EDGAR Online Forms website via Login.gov.
  2. Enter the CIK in the box labeled Enter EDGAR CIK.
  3. Select Search.
  4. The CIK with the filer’s name will appear in the box.
  5. Confirm the CIK.
    • If this is your first time logging into the webpage, confirm by selecting Select Login CIK.
    • If you previously selected a default CIK, confirm by selecting Change Login CIK.
  6. The page will refresh and the selected login CIK will appear on the page.

The login CIK will be successfully updated for the current session, and the chosen CIK will be reflected on the page and will be associated with the accession number of any submission. Note that these steps will not result in the selection of a default login CIK for your future logins to EDGAR.

Select a Default Login CIK

By selecting a default login CIK, an individual with roles for multiple filers can avoid having to select a login CIK each time the person logs into the EDGAR Filing or EDGAR Online Forms website. The individual can change the default login CIK at any time.

  1. Log into the EDGAR Filing or EDGAR Online Forms website.
  2. Enter the CIK in the box labeled Enter EDGAR CIK.
  3. Select Search.
  4. The CIK with the filer’s name will appear in the box.
  5. Select the Make this your default login CIK box.
  6. Select Select Login CIK if this is your first time logging into the webpage, or Change Login CIK if you are changing your default login CIK.
  7. The page will refresh with the default login CIK reflected on the page.

The login CIK will be successfully updated for the current session and reflected on the page. Upon logging into EDGAR Filing or Online Forms in the future, the default login CIK will be selected automatically. To change the default login CIK, follow the same process and select a different CIK.

Login CIK Permissions for Retrieve/Edit Data

To access Retrieve/Edit Data, you need to have filing permissions (account administrator, user, delegated administrator, or delegated user) for the CIK you enter on the Retrieve/Edit Data pages on the filing websites. The Login CIK and the CIK you enter in Retrieve/Edit Data must have a delegated relationship if they are different CIKs.

If you are using a login CIK which doesn’t have permissions associated with the filer, you will receive an “invalid permissions” error message. Follow the directions above to change the login CIK.
