Professional Opportunities
Experienced Professionals
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires the expertise and hard work of a talented team of professionals to maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets. To learn more about and apply to our current job openings, please visit our USAJOBS webpage.
Accountants
SEC Accountants perform a wide variety of work, ranging from examining financial statements in public filings and finding solutions to the most difficult and controversial accounting issues to rule-writing and participating in enforcement investigations. Accountants in the regional offices primarily work on enforcement matters and/or on issues arising out of the SEC's inspection programs.
Attorneys
SEC Attorneys serve as Advisers, Generalists, or Trial Attorneys. Typical duties may consist of investigating possible violations of the federal securities laws; conducting legal research and writing; providing guidance to companies on SEC rules and forms; and providing input for the proposal of new and revised rules to the Commission. Actual duties will depend on the Division/Office assigned within the SEC.
The SEC welcomes applications from Attorneys that possess a J.D. degree and are an active member of the bar in good standing (any jurisdiction) throughout the year. To receive consideration outside of our normal job opportunity announcements posted on USAJOBS, apply for SEC Attorney-Adviser Opportunities at the SK-13 grade level and below.
Economists
SEC Economists are responsible for using economic methods to solve problems across the entire range of SEC activities, including policymaking, rule-making, enforcement, examination, and other matters. SEC Economists identify and analyze issues, trends, and innovations in the marketplace; develop analytical approaches, methods, and models to uncover potential securities law violations; work with outside experts in academia and industry to strengthen the SEC's foundation of market knowledge; manage and analyze public and private data to support relevant initiatives and projects; and conduct research suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Examiners
SEC Securities Compliance Examiners have a varied and challenging range of responsibilities – from reviewing a mutual fund's portfolio to a broker-dealer's sales activities to reviewing the financials of a multimillion-dollar company. Examiners conduct inspections of firms by performing background research and on-site examinations, which include interviews with key personnel, tours of the operations, and review and analysis of the firm's records and operations. Examiners search for indications that securities laws have been violated or that the firm's compliance procedures and controls are weak.

The SEC is seeking highly qualified industry professionals to serve in our Divisions and Offices. Areas of expertise sought include risk management, valuation, options, clearing agencies, derivatives, information security technology, asset management, structured and new products, municipal securities, public pensions, foreign corrupt practices, market abuse, and much more.
