Putting Investors First: 2009 Performance and Accountability Report

Jan. 1, 2009

2009 Annual Report — Performance and Accountability Report

Message from the Chair:

Mary Shapiro

Over the past year, as a result of the economic turmoil, millions of Americans experienced significant losses in their retirement and family investments. That turmoil also had an impact on investor confidence. Since I became Chairman in January 2009, the SEC has moved swiftly to renew our commitment to protecting investors and restoring that confidence. Indeed, everything the agency has done has been with these goals in mind.

Mission and Vision:

The mission of the SEC is to protect investors; maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets; and facilitate capital formation. The SEC’s vision is to strengthen the integrity and soundness of U.S. securities markets for the benefit of investors and other market participants, and to conduct its work in a manner that is as sophisticated, flexible, and dynamic as the securities markets it regulates.
