Interactive Data and Mutual Fund Risk/Return Summaries

Mutual Fund Risk/Return Summary Taxonomy Upgrade

SEC staff has completed updates to the technology infrastructure to fully support the submission of Risk/Return Summary information in XBRL. Mutual funds are now able to create and fully test their XBRL documents in preparation for the January 1, 2011 compliance date (see http://sec.gov/
rules/final/2009/33-9006.pdf
). Effective April 12, 2010, the following three items have been updated:

  • Risk/Return Summary taxonomy — The 2010 Risk/Return Summary taxonomy has been updated from its 2008 release primarily with technical changes to enhance the rendering of XBRL-tagged documents. The 2010 taxonomy is accompanied by sample tagged documents, an architecture guide, and a rendering guide. See http://www.sec.gov/info/edgar/edgartaxonomies.shtml for further information on which versions of taxonomies are required to be used and the appropriate taxonomy files.
  • Previewer/Viewer — In addition, the Commission's Previewer/Viewer has been updated to support the Risk/Return Summary taxonomy. Mutual funds can now preview how their Risk/Return submissions will appear by using the Previewer located at https://datapreview.sec.gov/previewer/.
  • XBRL Validation — Lastly, the EDGAR system has been updated so that the XBRL validator will now test the Risk/Return Summary XBRL exhibits to ensure compliance with the requirements of the EDGAR Filer Manual Chapter 6.

The staff encourages mutual funds, filing agents, and software vendors to begin the process of tagging their Risk/Return Summary information, submitting test filings to EDGAR to validate their documents, and previewing the documents in the Previewer to help prepare for the January 1, 2011 compliance date.

The SEC staff welcomes any questions or comments on these related updates. You can contact the staff at Ask-OID@sec.gov or (202) 551-4144.

On February 11, 2009, the Commission issued rules requiring mutual funds to provide risk/return summary information in the XBRL interactive data format. Read the Commission's official release.
