SEC Philadelphia Office Shares Tips, Resources, and Insights with Local Seniors

June 13, 2018

PHILADELPHIA, JUNE 12, 2018 — The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Philadelphia Regional Office hosted an educational event for older investors at West Chester University. Representatives from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities, Temple University Institute on Protective Services, Chester County District Attorney’s Office, AARP, and SEC staff shared tips, resources, and insights with more than 100 area seniors who attended the event.

“Today was about empowering senior investors to identify the red flags of fraud, building awareness of the resources available and discussing the basics of investing,” said G. Jeffrey Boujoukos, Director of the SEC’s Philadelphia Regional Office, who gave opening remarks to start the event. “Investors should always ask questions to understand the investments and professionals they are dealing with, don’t ever hesitate to ask questions and use resources like Investor.gov.”

Presentations at the educational event were specifically designed for seniors and those approaching retirement because they often have different financial goals than other investors. They are also a frequent target for fraudsters and scammers. Panels covered the risks and appropriateness of certain investment products, how changes in thought and memory affect decision making, how to ensure you’re getting what you paid for, and the red flags of investment fraud.

Older investors and those approaching retirement who could not attend the event are encouraged to check out the information and resources available from the SEC at Investor.gov/Seniors. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy is also available to answer any questions about investing at 1-800-732-0330.

This event was not affiliated with West Chester University.
