The SEC’s outreach to elder investors recently took Chairman Jay Clayton and leaders of the SEC’s LA office to Santa Monica for a town hall meeting on investing wisely.
About two dozen seniors attended the event at Santa Monica College Emeritus for a lively discussion on such topics as evaluating investment choices, choosing financial professionals and spotting potential fraud.
“The basics of investing, including learning how to spot the hallmarks of fraud, are important to understand no matter your age. Seniors can unfortunately be particular targets for financial fraud, but events like this can help them better understand concepts like compounding, how important it is to have an investment plan, and the effects of fees and costs. They also empower them to become messengers to their children, grand-children, and peers on fundamental financial literacy. I thank the participants for their valuable comments. They will inform our work moving forward.”
– Chairman Jay Clayton
“Investor outreach and education for the senior community is a high priority for us. We have found nothing beats in-person events for sharing information and learning from older investors how we can best serve their interests.”
– Michele Wein Layne, SEC Los Angeles Regional Office Director
Over the past two years SEC Divisions and Offices have conducted dozens of investor outreach events for seniors, teachers, military personnel and other groups
