In honor of Women’s History Month, the SEC’s Women’s Committee and the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion welcomed Dr. Redonda Miller, the first female president of Johns Hopkins Hospital, for a virtual fireside chat, which centered around this year’s Women’s History Month theme, “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” SEC Chair Gary Gensler gave the opening remarks at the event, which brought in over 165 attendees.
During Dr. Miller’s tenure, Johns Hopkins Hospital received a gold certification for person-centered care from Planetree International, becoming the largest academic medical center in the world to be certified by the organization. In 2020, Dr. Miller was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine and the Maryland Chamber of Commerce Business Hall of Fame.
Women’s Committee Co-Sponsor Sarah ten Siethoff led the discussion with Dr. Miller that included how she ended up studying medicine, her path from physician to health care administrator, balancing family life with a busy work schedule, and how her hospital has handled the challenges of the pandemic. Dr. Miller emphasized focusing on purpose, impact, and positivity when dealing with difficult situations.
A Q&A followed the discussion, during which Dr. Miller answered questions on Johns Hopkins’ role in the community and how to prevent burnout.
