Hurricane Irma made landfall in Florida on Sept. 10, 2017.
Weeks after Hurricane Irma had passed, signs of its ferocity were everywhere, recalls Carolyn O’Brien of the SEC’s Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations in Boston. Despite the devastation, she says, “it soon became apparent that this was a story of love, compassion, poverty, resiliency, humility, heroism, and hope.” As a volunteer in Fort Myers, she saw how neighbors and communities came together to help with whatever was needed, be it a meal, a generator, or a sympathetic ear.
“It was an opportunity to serve and to be of service that I could not pass up."

Since I have been away assisting FEMA with its hurricane relief efforts, I have missed my wife’s birthday, a vacation and several other family gatherings…. Although I may have missed celebrating some of these events with my family and friends, after meeting so many individuals who have lost so much more, I’m glad I was able to be out here to help with this effort.
