FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 98-46 Lynn Turner Named New SEC Chief Accountant Washington, DC, May 7, 1998 -- Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Arthur Levitt today announced the appointment of Lynn Turner as the Commission's Chief Accountant. Mr. Turner, who succeeds Michael Sutton, will join the Commission on July 1, 1998. Arthur Levitt said, "Lynn has worked at the SEC, as an auditor, as a standard setter, and most recently as the CFO of a high-tech company. He has sat on all four sides of the table, giving him a keen understanding of the various and sometimes competing needs and views of the participants in the financial reporting process. As Chief Accountant, Mr. Turner will manage a number of important accounting issues, including the development and coordination of international accounting standards and professional independence issues. Since 1996 Mr. Turner has served as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Symbios, Inc., a Colorado-based manufacturer of semiconductors and storage systems. Prior to that he was a partner at Coopers & Lybrand, where he was designated as an SEC Consulting partner. He also was appointed as the National Practice Leader for the Coopers & Lybrand High Technology Audit Practice, with responsibility for more than 1,000 professionals. Mr. Turner has worked on various industry task forces, including the AICPA Task Force on Accounting for Software Revenue Recognition. From 1989 to 1991 he served as a Professional Accounting Fellow at the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he focused on oversight of the professional standard setting practice. And from 1976 to 1989 Turner served in various auditor and management positions at Coopers & Lybrand. Mr. Turner received his M.A. in Accounting from the University of Nebraska and his B.A. in Business Administration from Colorado State University. Turner, 46, is the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Symbios, Inc. of Fort Collins, Colorado. He is part of the company's Executive Management Team which, with the CEO, develops and sets company strategy, budgets and business plans. Additional responsibilities for the company -- an international semiconductor and storage manufacturer with over 2,400 employees -- include managing the finance organization, including financial reporting, accounting, treasury, planning and analysis and taxes. Lynn has held the position since June of 1996. Before joining Symbios, Lynn was a partner with Coopers & Lybrand (C&L). As National Practice Leader for the C&L High Technology Audit Practice, he had responsibility for an audit practice with over 1,000 professionals. With the exception of a two-year appointment with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr. Turner held positions of increasing responsibility with C&L between 1976 and 1991, including a two year assignment in the C&L National Office. In the National Office, Lynn had responsibility for observing various professional standard setting efforts, drafting the Firm's position papers, working as liaison to a Congressional Committee and providing support for committee hearings, and providing technical support to C&L practice offices and clients. Between 1989 and 1991, Lynn held the position of Professional Accounting Fellow, Securities and Exchange Commission, where he served a two-year appointment in the Office of the Chief Accountant. He had responsibility for the oversight of professional standard setting process, worked with congressional committees, was liaison with professional organizations, and provided input on development of rules and regulations and resolution of registrant public filing issues. Lynn is a member of the AICPA Task Force on Accounting for Internal Use Software and served as the Coopers & Lybrand L.L.P. observer to the AICPA Task Force on Accounting for Software Revenue Recognition. As a Professional Accounting Fellow, Lynn was the SEC observer to the FASB Task Force on Other Post Employment Benefits, the Auditing Standards Board and the AICPA Task Force on Software Revenue Recognition. Lynn also served as the interim SEC observer to the Emerging Issues Task Force and various working groups. Additionally, he has been a co-author of Software Industry Accounting and AICPA Educational Case Studies, and has contributed to Montgomery's Auditing and articles in trade publications. He was also an Adjunct Professor of Accounting at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, for two years. Lynn is a member of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants (CSCPA), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Financial Executive Institute.
