FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 97-62 TULSA STUDENTS TO BE HONORED AT INVESTORS' TOWN MEETING Dewey Middle School team's stock picks "beat the Street" in Stock Market Game. Washington, DC July 28, 1997 -- Students from Dewey Middle School will be honored for their investing acumen in a special ceremony at the Investors' Town Meeting in Tulsa on Monday, August 4. The Town Meeting will feature U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Arthur Levitt, Congressman Steve Largent and Irving Faught, Administrator of the Oklahoma Securities Commission. The youngsters outperformed their peers, as well as Wall Street, in the Stock Market Game, a financial literacy teaching tool developed by the Securities Industry Association's (SIA) Foundation for Economic Education. The five-member team won the state's eastern junior division in the Spring competition, ending with a final hypothetical portfolio worth $109,526 on April 24 -- up more than 9%. Impressive enough, but even more so when you consider that during the same ten-week period, the Dow dropped 230 points and the S&P 500 was off 5%. Nearly 1,000 Oklahoma students from 46 schools participated. Each team started with an imaginary $100,000 to invest in common stocks listed on the major exchanges. The students researched real companies, and decided for themselves when to buy or sell shares. The classroom competition has been offered since 1984 by the Oklahoma Council on Economic Education (OCEE) of the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. "The Stock Market Game helps students understand how our American market economy operates," said OCEE President Jean Caldwell. "Also, it helps students learn about the importance of investment to our economy and their own lives." SEC Chairman Levitt and SIA President Marc Lackritz will present framed certificates to the winning team and school officials. The students are Lindsey Cook, Amber Fielder, Bobbie and Billie Ford, and Jeremy Kerns. Their teacher, Petey DeLozier has sponsored several winning teams in recent years. The Investor's Town Meeting will take place from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. at the Union Performing Arts Center, followed by investment seminars. Anyone interested in learning more about their investments and how to avoid costly mistakes is invited. Admission is free but reservations are recommended. Call 1-800-378-9345.
