FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2001-84 Commission Adopts Rules for Futures Markets Trading Futures on Individual Stocks and Narrow-Based Indexes to Register and File Proposed Rule Changes Washington, DC, August 14, 2001 - On August 13, 2001, the Commission adopted new rules and amended existing rules to implement provisions in the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 that allow futures markets to register as national securities exchanges by filing a written notice with the Commission and to file proposed rule changes using an expedited process. The Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 authorizes trading of futures on individual stocks and narrow- based stock indexes. Trading between eligible contract participants on a principal-to-principal basis may begin as early as August 21, 2001. The new rules and amendments will be effective upon publication in the Federal Register. # # #
