I have 20 years of experience with advanced financial products such as futures and options. I use a VIX-based medium-term ETF to hedge downside risk without incurring large capital gain taxes. These products are valuable to me, and I believe that decisions about their use should be left to individuals and the brokerage/clearing firms through which they trade them. I know, for example, that Vanguard does not allow leverage funds on its platform. That's an appropriate form of self-regulation that is better than prohibition by a regulatory authority.
