Dear S.E.C., I oppose the Trump administration’s proposed rollback of the ‘Climate Disclosure Rule’ that would require transparency from publicly traded companies, forcing them to provide investors with detailed information about the climate and environmental impact of their businesses. But climate risk is financial risk, and to protect the planet and its people from another financial crisis, businesses must disclose the risks they face from climate change and a warming planet. Allowing corporations to hide the climate-related risks they face from investors could lead to the same devastating fallout from the early 2000s, when money piled into high-risk subprime mortgages until the global economy buckled and hundreds of thousands of Americans lost their homes, jobs, and savings. It’s time to be frank about what fossil fuels are doing to our planet. Please keep the ‘Climate Disclosure Rule’ in place. Mandatory business transparency around climate risks is critical to protecting our planet, our investments, and future generations. Thank you, Alison Monroe
