Do the right thing. Defend the formerly respected and reasonably autonomous institution, unless...you are part of the problem, or are afraid; only You know. Should you act to defend yourselves rather than the supposed integrity and character of the Comission, you will know deep down that you ARE, indeed, the problem. In such case, the truth will not set you free, but rather, will hold you to account and haunt you indefinitely...to face yourselves, children, friends... fellow citizens, and your own self-deception.
