Transparency in the public sphere is an essential element of robust democratic practice. In a primarily commercially mediated society like our own, that transparency must include avenues for all citizens to know and discuss the sources of funding for political messaging. As an instructor of media studies at a flagship, land grant public university, I am tasked with teaching this truth to our country's students. I hope the SEC will see fit to acting on that truth and establishing an institutional structure that reflects it.
Please pass the proposed rule that would require publicly traded corporations to publicly disclose all of their political spending.
Thanks for your consideration.
