The companies identified as affiliates of BNSF include Berkshire and its subsidiaries. For the years ended December 31, 2016, 2015 and 2014, the Company declared and paid cash distributions of $2.5 billion, $4 billion and $3.5 billion, respectively, to its parent company. For the years ended December 31, 2016, 2015 and 2014, the Company received tax refunds of $235 million, $167 million and $104 million, respectively, from Berkshire, and made cash payments of $893 million, $1,285 million and $1,253 million, respectively, for income taxes to Berkshire. As of December 31, 2016 and 2015, the Company has a payable to Berkshire of $109 million and a receivable of $109 million, respectively.

BNSF engages in various transactions with related parties in the ordinary course of business. The following table summarizes revenues earned by BNSF for services provided to related parties and expenditures to related parties (in millions):
