Goodwill and Other Intangibles

During the second quarter, we completed our annual goodwill impairment test. Based on the results of step one of this test, no impairment losses were identified and performance of step two was not required. During 2011, there was a decrease in goodwill related to the divestiture of an immaterial business. Amortization expense relating to intangible assets for the years ended December 31, 2011, 2010 and 2009 was $20.4 million, $23.3 million and $12.6 million, respectively. Amortization expense for the years ended December 31, 2010 and 2009 included a write down of an acquisition related intangible asset for internally developed software of 0.1 million and less than 0.1 million, respectively. The write down was based on a change in the estimated net realizable value of the asset. We estimate that we will have the following amortization expense for the future periods indicated below (in thousands):
