12. Defined benefit pension obligation

We maintain a defined benefit pension plan for Incyte Biosciences Luxembourg S.a.r.l. employees. The plan provides benefits to employees upon retirement, death or disability.

The net periodic benefit cost for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2016 was as follows (in thousands):

We plan to contribute a total of $1.4 million to the plan in 2016 inclusive of the amounts contributed to the plan during the current period. As of September 30, 2016, $4.6 million of accrued pension obligation is recorded in other long term liabilities on the condensed consolidated balance sheets.
