5. Stock-Based Compensation

Stock-based compensation expense was recognized in the Consolidated Statements of Operations as follows:

During the three months ended March 31, 2021 and 2020, the Company granted 11 thousand and 7 thousand restricted stock awards, respectively to non-employee directors for compensation.
