Safeco’s Board of Directors has accepted the resignation of G. Thompson Hutton, effective immediately. In connection with his appointment as President and Chief Executive Officer of White Mountains Re Group, Ltd., Mr. Hutton tendered his resignation for the board’s consideration as required by Safeco’s Corporate Governance Guidelines whenever a director’s principal occupation or business association changes.

The Board reduced its size from 11 to ten.
