4. COMMON EQUITY AND EARNINGS PER SHARE DATA

The common stock per share information is based upon the weighted average number of shares outstanding during each period. For the three and nine month periods ended September 30, 2023 the Company had an average of 9,034 and 16,773 dilutive shares outstanding, respectively. For the three and nine month periods ended September 30, 2022 the Company had an average of 36,646 and 42,572 dilutive shares outstanding, respectively.

Potential common shares that would have the effect of increasing diluted earnings per share are considered to be anti-dilutive and not included in calculating diluted earnings per share. There was an average of 80,770 and 84,518 potentially anti-dilutive shares outstanding for the three and nine month periods ended September 30, 2023, respectively. For the three and nine month periods ended September 30, 2022, there was an average of 54,680 and 55,847 potentially anti-dilutive shares outstanding, respectively. Potentially anti-dilutive shares outstanding were not included in calculating diluted earnings per share because their effect was anti-dilutive.
