Accounting Standards Update and Change in Accounting Principle [Abstract]
Recent Accounting Pronouncements Recent Accounting PronouncementsIn June 2016, the FASB issued ASU 2016-13, Financial Instruments (Topic 326) (“ASU 2016-13”). In 2019, the FASB issued ASU 2019-04, Codification Improvements to Topic 326, Financial Instruments—Credit Losses, Topic 815, Derivatives and Hedging, and Topic 825, Financial Instruments (“ASU 2019-04”); ASU 2019-05, Financial Instruments—Credit Losses (Topic 326): Targeted Transition Relief (“ASU 2019-05”); ASU 2019-10, Financial Instruments—Credit Losses (Topic 326), Derivatives and Hedging (Topic 815), and Leases (Topic 942)—Effective Dates (“ASU 2019-10”); and ASU 2019-11, Codification Improvements to Topic 326, Financial Instruments—Credit Losses (“ASU 2019-11”). This update and related amendments to Topic 326 are intended to provide financial statement users with more decision-useful information about the expected credit losses on financial instruments and other commitments to extend credit held by a reporting entity at each reporting date. To achieve this objective, the amendments in this update replace the incurred loss impairment methodology with a CECL model methodology that reflects expected credit losses and requires consideration of a reasonable and supportable economic forecast to inform credit loss estimates. This ASU is effective for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2019. The Company adopted this update on January 1, 2020 utilizing a modified retrospective approach. On adoption of ASU 2016-13, the Company recognized a decrease in the allowance for loan losses of $20.4 million and an increase in the reserve for unfunded loan commitments of $1.4 million. The net, after-tax impact of the decrease in the allowance for loan losses and the increase in the reserve for unfunded loan commitments was an increase to Retained earnings of $13.5 million as shown in the Consolidated Statements of Changes in Shareholders’ Equity. See Part I. Item 1. “Notes to Unaudited Consolidated Financial Statements - Note 4: Investments”, “Note 6 - Loan Portfolio and Credit Quality”, and “Note 7 - Allowance for Loan Losses” for further details.
