16. Income Taxes

Our effective income tax rate for the three months ended March 31, 2013 was 21.7% as compared to the 10.6% effective income tax rate for the three month period ended March 31, 2012.  The effective income tax rate is less than the statutory tax rate due in large part to significant tax exempt income in both periods. The increase in the effective tax rate period to period was primarily due to the change in proportion of tax exempt income to total pre-tax income during the first quarter of 2013 as compared to the first quarter of 2012.
