Cash and Cash Equivalents

Cash equivalents are short-term, highly liquid investments with insignificant interest rate risk and original maturities of three months or less at acquisition. At March 31, 2017, restricted and designated cash and investments totaled $25.3 million, of which $13.1 million was included in other current assets and $12.2 million was included in other non-current assets in the consolidated balance sheet. Restricted and designated cash and investments totaled $21.7 million at December 31, 2016, of which $9.3 million was included in other current assets and $12.4 million was included in other non-current assets in the consolidated balance sheet.  The restricted funds represent deposits required by state agencies for self-insurance purposes and designated funds that are earmarked for a specific purpose and not for general business use.
