[1] The decrease in net periodic benefit cost for the three months ended July 1, 2012, compared to the three months ended July 3, 2011, for our U.S. qualified plans reflects the curtailment gain resulting from the decision to freeze the defined benefit plans in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The net periodic benefit cost for the six months ended July 1, 2012, compared to the six months ended July 3, 2011, for our U.S. qualified plans was largely unchanged, as a decrease in the discount rate, an increase in the amounts amortized for actuarial losses due to lower than expected actual returns during 2011 and higher settlement charges associated with ongoing restructuring initiatives were offset by the curtailment gain resulting from the decision to freeze the defined benefit plans in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and contributions made to the plan in 2011.
[2] The decrease in net periodic benefit cost for three months and six months ended July 1, 2012, compared to the three months and six months ended July 3, 2011, for our U.S. supplemental (non-qualified) pension plans reflects the curtailment gain resulting from the decision to freeze the defined benefit plans in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
[3] The decrease in net periodic benefit costs for the six months ended July 1, 2012, compared to the six months ended July 3, 2011, for our international pension plans was primarily driven by changes in assumptions in our U.K. plans in 2011 and higher curtailment gains associated with ongoing restructuring initiatives.
