Longs Reports Preliminary March Sales

 

WALNUT CREEK, CA (April 7, 2005) – Longs Drug Stores Corporation (NYSE:LDG) today reported that preliminary total sales for the five-week period ended March 31, 2005 were $446.3 million compared with $444.0 million for the comparable period a year ago, an increase of 0.5%. Pharmacy sales were 49.4% of total drug store sales compared with 48.5% for the comparable period of fiscal 2005.

 

Preliminary same-store sales increased 0.4% over the same period last year. Pharmacy same-store sales increased 2.4% and front-end same-store sales decreased 1.4%. Longs estimated that preliminary March same-store sales were favorably impacted approximately 100 basis points from the shift in Easter holiday sales to March this year compared with April last year.

 

Preliminary quarter-to-date sales of $800.6 million for the nine weeks ended March 31, 2005 were 0.2% lower than the $802.3 million reported in the comparable period last year. Pharmacy sales were 49.2% of total drug store sales during the period, compared with 47.9% a year ago. Same-store sales decreased 0.5% with pharmacy same-store sales increasing 2.2% and front-end same-store sales decreasing 2.9%.
