Note 8—Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets

In accordance with FASB ASC 350, Intangibles—Goodwill and Other, the Company ceased amortization of goodwill as of January 1, 2002. The Company has determined that there has been no impairment of goodwill as of December 31, 2016. Amortization expense totaled $7.6 million, $8.3 million and $8.3 million for the years ended December 31, 2016, 2015, and 2014, respectively. Other intangibles are amortized using either the straight‑line method or an accelerated basis over their estimated useful lives, with lives generally between 2 and 15 years.
