Note 6: Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets

        The Company performs an annual assessment of its goodwill for impairment as of the beginning of the fiscal fourth quarter. The Company also assesses its goodwill and other intangible assets for impairment when events or circumstances indicate that their carrying value may not be recoverable from future cash flows.

        The changes in the carrying amount of goodwill for the six months ended May 27, 2012 are as follows (in thousands):

        Total other intangibles of $1.0 million (net of accumulated amortization of $3.6 million) as of May 27, 2012 consist primarily of licenses, which are amortized using a straight-line method over periods ranging from 5 to 15 years. Costs to renew or extend the term of a recognized intangible asset are expensed as incurred. During each of the three and six months ended May 27, 2012 and May 29, 2011, the Company recognized amortization expense associated with intangibles of $0.1 million and $0.2 million, for both fiscal 2011 and fiscal 2010. The Company expects to recognize amortization expense relating to these intangibles of $0.1 million for the remainder of 2012, $0.3 million in 2013, $0.3 million in 2014, and $0.3 million in 2015.
