Health Insurance Industry Tax
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and a reconciliation measure, the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (together, Health Reform Legislation) includes an annual, nondeductible insurance industry tax (Health Insurance Industry Tax). In September 2015, the Company paid its full year 2015 Health Insurance Industry Tax of $1.8 billion. As of September 30, 2015, the deferred cost recorded in prepaid expenses and other current assets on the Condensed Consolidated Balance Sheets related to the Health Insurance Industry Tax was $450 million. There was no liability or asset related to the Health Insurance Industry Tax recorded as of December 31, 2014 as the Health Insurance Industry Tax was paid in September 2014 and the asset was fully expensed by year end.
