SUBSEQUENT EVENTS	NOTE 15: SUBSEQUENT EVENTS On October 22, 2016, the Company entered into a definitive merger agreement to be acquired by Community Bank System, Inc. for approximately $304 million in Community Bank System, Inc. stock and cash. The merger is subject to the approval by the stockholders of Merchants Bancshares, Inc. and regulatory authorities and is expected to be completed during the second quarter of 2017.
