Net property, plant and equipment as of December 31, 2017 and 2016 contained $42.1 million and $34.7 million of computer software assets, respectively, which are classified within machinery and equipment and construction in progress. Amortization expense for software was $7.1 million, $7.0 million and $6.1 million for the years ended December 31, 2017, 2016 and 2015, respectively.

The increase in net property, plant and equipment is primarily due to the Esselte Acquisition.
