12. Leases and other commitments

Certain of our subsidiaries lease manufacturing and office space under non-cancelable operating leases. These leases contain renewal options. We lease certain other real property and equipment under operating leases which, in the aggregate, are not significant.

Rent expense associated with our operating leases was approximately $2.1 million, $1.8 million, and $2.2 million in fiscal years 2014, 2013 and 2012, respectively.

The following is a schedule by year of future minimum lease payments at July 31, 2014:

At July 31, 2014, we had outstanding non-cancelable purchase orders aggregating to $60.1 million. The purchase orders are for manufacturing and non-manufacturing related goods and services.
