9.INCOME TAXES

 

The effective income tax rate was 35.6% in the third quarter of 2017, compared to 35.0% in the third quarter of 2016. The effective income tax rate was 34.8% for the first three quarters of 2017, compared to 33.3% for the first three quarters of 2016. The effective income tax rate for the third quarter of 2017 differed from the federal statutory rate primarily due to the effect of state income taxes partially offset by the utilization of tax credits and deductions.  The effective income tax rate for the first three quarters of 2017 differed from the federal statutory rate due to the utilization of tax credits and deductions partially offset by the effect of state income taxes. The effective income tax rate for the third quarter of 2016 was equal to the federal statutory rate due to the utilization of tax credits and deductions, offset by the effect of state income taxes.  The effective income tax rate for the first three quarters of 2016 differed from the federal statutory rate primarily due to the recognition of excess tax benefits related to share-based payments after the adoption of ASU 2016-09, “Compensation-Stock Compensation (Topic 718),” which caused a reduction in income tax expense of $42 in the first three quarters of 2016, and the benefit from tax credits and deductions, partially offset by the effect of state income taxes.
