Family Dollar Reports March Sales

MATTHEWS, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Family Dollar Stores, Inc. (NYSE: FDO) reported that net sales for the five weeks ended April 5, 2008, decreased 1.6% to $641.2 million compared with $651.4 million for the five-week period ended April 7, 2007. March sales results were negatively impacted by one less day of sales resulting from the shift of Easter into the March period. Total sales for the five-week period were strongest in the consumables category; sales of more discretionary categories, especially apparel and lawn and garden, were soft. Comparable store sales decreased 4.4%. The Company had 6,530 stores as of April 5, 2008, including 23 new stores opened in the March period.

April Sales Outlook

Reflecting that the Easter holiday occurred in the March period this year, the Company expects that comparable store sales in the April period will increase 4% to 6%.
