Factors Affecting Performance [Text Block]
Management's Discussion of Fund Performance
The following discussion compares the performance of the Fund to the S&P Municipal Bond Index (the “Index”) to show how the Fund’s performance compares to the returns of similar investments for the reporting period. See the Average Annual Total Returns table below for the returns of the Fund and related indexes. The Fund seeks to provide for its shareholders a high level of current income which is exempt from federal regular income tax by investing at least a majority of its assets in a portfolio of investment-grade, tax-exempt securities.
Top Contributors to Performance
  • The Fund’s credit allocation, notably an overweight position in A-rated and BBB-rated bonds and an underweight position in bonds with ratings of AA and AAA was a positive contributor to relative performance versus the Index.
  • Sector allocation, especially overweight positions in life care and toll roads, added to relative performance.
  • Individual security selection was a positive contributor to performance relative to the Index. This includes several Fund holdings which were advance refunded.
Top Detractors from Performance
  • The Fund’s duration was longer than that of the Index while interest rates rose. This was a net detractor from relative performance.
  • The Fund yield curve allocation, particularly an overweight position in bonds with a duration of six to eight years and an underweight position in bonds with a duration of less than two years, was also a detractor from performance relative to the Index.
