Pleased to announce that NYSE: OCA has signed a business combination agreement with Kin Insurance, the only pureplay home insurance direct to consumer (DTC) in the United States.

I’m so passionate about Kin because it sits at the intersection of massive societal shifts disrupting the home insurance industry. I’ll highlight two.

First, climate change. Every day brings catastrophic headlines about once inconceivable weather events. Many insurance companies who do not heavily utilize data in decision making have been unable to navigate this volatility and instead abandon our most vulnerable regions for supposedly greener pastures. I see this happening at an alarming rate in Florida. Problem is, before long, the entire US will be climate impacted.

Kin has built an insurance company for every new normal. Huge troves of objective data and endless weather simulations help Kin assess risk and price risk appropriately even in the climate impacted areas. They partner with their customers on how to harden their homes to reduce risk and better withstand the elements – even seemingly small gestures like changing the length of old roof nails in the attic that may have sufficed 30 years ago but are now inadequate.

Second, the pandemic compressed years of ecommerce adoption into months. Now anything that can be sold online will be. Homeowners insurance is a virtual product with a $100 billion+ total addressable market. As soon as a new Kin customer types their address, Kin’s backend draws upon thousands of data points to produce a quote in minutes, when competitors can take days, if not weeks to do the same. The industry resists digitization because of channel conflict. For a legacy insurance company that relies on a vast network of independent third-party agents, going DTC means competing against the lifeblood of your company.

Now the Omni team – 10 founders among them, including my partners Gary Vaynerchuk and Christina Tosi; Al Carey, former CEO of PepsiCo North America; and legendary brand builders Emmett Shine and Bobbi Brown – will continue our work to elevate Kin’s brand as it scales nationally. More to come on that front.

Kin might not be in your neck of the woods yet, but they also announced today an agreement to acquire an inactive insurer holding insurance licenses in more than 40 states to expedite national expansion plans.
