Intro: Now, Southeast Asia’s superapp Grab, recently announced that it’s going to list on the Nasdaq with a 40 billion dollar valuation, but it’s doing it via a special purpose acquisition company, also known as SPAC, in what is the biggest such deal in the world. Our Asia business correspondent Karishma Vaswani tells us how the company grew from a ride-hailing company to one of the biggest tech giants in the region.

Karishma: From the ridesharing service, to food deliveries and now finance. Natthakan Khingphat opened his restaurant in Bangkok during the first wave of COVID-19. Business is brisk, so he needed a loan to buy more equipment and ingredients. But going to the bank was never an option.

Natthakan: “I knew that if I took out loans from the banks, the restaurant would definitely have a cash flow problem and could eventually force me to shut it down. If I were to pay for the high monthly interest rate, I didn’t think I could survive.”

Natthakan took out a loan on the Grab app. A small amount is deducted from his daily earnings as repayment. Being a banker to the masses is where Grab sees its future. In less than a decade, Grab has transformed itself into a financial services app. You can get loans, take out insurance and invest. You can also pay for stuff. Like a simple meal at this hawker center here in Singapore, all with just one tap of your phone. Grab made 1.6 billion dollars in revenue last year. Financial services, including payments, accounted for 18 percent of that. It’s a part of the business Grab is hoping to grow.

Reuben: “We are focused on our, the youngest segment—the everyday entrepreneurs that traditionally were not served by banks. And what we want to be is really the platform that enables financial institutions, fintechs to serve this emerging consumer.”

The company hasn’t made a profit yet, but in mid-April announced it’s going to list in the U.S. to raise funds for future expansion.

Robson Lee, Partner, Gibson Dunn: “They have forecasted very good numbers. But I think the devil’s in the details. How are they going to realize it? How is it going to come to fruition after the merger? And once they’re listed on NASDAQ, I think investors have got to continue to be vigilant and watch this very carefully.”

Grab isn’t the only one targeting growth in financial services. Southeast Asia’s Shopee, Indonesia’s Gojek and Korean-based Coupang are all entering the fray. Driving away the competition will be key to Grab’s success.
