As of January 31, 2022, the Company recorded $50.0 million of short-term investments, comprised of certificates of deposit with a bank with an original maturity of greater than three months at the date of purchase. Such investments were carried at amortized cost, which approximated their fair value.
The Company uses the specific-identification method to determine any realized gains or losses from the sale of our short-term investments classified as available-for-sale. During the three months ended April 30, 2022, the Company did not have any sale of our short-term investments classified as available-for-sale.
As of April 30, 2022, the Company does not have any cash equivalents and short-term investments that have been in a continuous unrealized gain or loss position for more than 12 months as of the periods presented. The following table summarizes unrealized losses on our cash equivalents and short-term investments by category that have been in a continuous unrealized loss position for less than 12 months as of the periods presented (in thousands):
