Note 9. Fair Value Measurements

Our derivatives are valued using a discounted cash flow analysis that incorporates observable market parameters, such as interest rate yield curves, classified as Level 2 within the valuation hierarchy. Derivative valuations incorporate credit risk adjustments that are necessary to reflect the probability of default by us or the counterparty.

The following table presents our assets and liabilities measured at fair value on a recurring basis and the levels of inputs used to measure fair value, which include derivatives designated as cash flow hedging instruments, as well as their location on our consolidated balance sheets as of December 31, 2017 (amounts in thousands):

Certain non-financial assets and liabilities are measured at fair value on a nonrecurring basis. These assets and liabilities are not measured at fair value on an ongoing basis but are subject to periodic impairment tests. These items primarily include long-lived assets, goodwill and other intangible assets. As of December 31, 2016, there were no assets and liabilities measured at fair value on a recurring basis.

The carrying amounts of cash, accounts receivable and accounts payable approximate fair value because of the short maturity of these items. The carrying value of the long-term debt approximates fair value because this instrument bears interest at a variable rate, is pre-payable, and is at terms currently available to the Company.
