Note 16. Income Taxes

The Company had no income tax benefit/(expense) for the three months ended September 30, 2020 and had less than ($0.1) million in income tax benefit/(expense) for the nine months ended September 30, 2020. The Company had no income tax benefit/(expense) for the three months ended September 30, 2019 and less than $0.1 million income tax benefit/(expense) for the nine months ended September 30, 2019. The Company’s effective tax rate was 0.0% for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2020, and 0.0% and 0.6% for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2019, respectively. The effective tax rates for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2020 and 2019 are different from the statutory U.S. federal income tax rate primarily due to our recorded valuation allowances.

In March 2020, the President of the United States signed the CARES Act, to stabilize the economy during the coronavirus pandemic. The CARES Act temporarily suspends and modifies certain tax laws established by the 2017 tax reform law known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, including, but not limited to, modifications to net operating loss limitations, business interest limitations and alternative minimum tax. The CARES Act did not have a material impact on the Company’s current year tax provision.
