Note 11—Income Taxes

The effective tax rate was 20.0% and 16.5% for the three months ended March 31, 2020 and 2019, respectively. The change in the effective tax rate for the three months ended March 31, 2020 compared to the respective prior year period was primarily due to the decrease in recognition of windfall tax benefits from stock awards in the current year, partially offset by a proportionate change in the composition of income before income taxes from foreign and domestic tax jurisdictions.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act”) was enacted on March 27, 2020 in the United States.  We evaluated the provisions of the CARES Act as of March 31, 2020, with no material effect on income taxes in the financial statements. Certain tax provisions of the CARES Act may result in immaterial cash tax benefits.
