(NYSE: ARO), a mall-based specialty retailer of casual and active apparel for young women and men, today announced that total net sales for the five-week period ended January 3, 2004 increased 28.9% to $150.9 million, compared to $117.1 million for the five-week period ended January 4, 2003. The company's comparable store sales increased 5.7% for the month, versus the year-ago comparable store sales increase of 0.3%. Year-to-date, total net sales have increased 32.8% to $699.5 million, compared to $526.9 million in the year-ago period. Year-to-date, comparable store sales have increased 6.0%, compared to 6.7% in the year-ago period. Julian R. Geiger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said, "We were very pleased with the results of the Holiday sales period. Our merchandising and promotional strategies were successful and we believe that we are well-positioned for the transition to our spring season."
