10. SEGMENT INFORMATION

The accounting guidance for segment reporting establishes standards for reporting information on operating segments in annual financial statements. The Company operates in one segment, which is the business of developing and commercializing technologies for the production of polymers and chemicals in plants and in microbes. The Company’s chief operating decision-maker does not manage any part of the Company separately, and the allocation of resources and assessment of performance are based on the Company’s consolidated operating results. As of September 30, 2011 and 2010, respectively, less than 10% of the Company’s combined total assets were located outside of the United States and the reported net loss outside of the United States was less than 10% of the combined net loss of the consolidated Company.
