Earnings Per Share

Basic and diluted earnings per share for each period presented have been computed by dividing net income (loss) attributable to Gentiva shareholders by the weighted average number of shares outstanding for each respective period. The computations of the basic and diluted per share amounts were as follows (in thousands, except per share amounts):

For the third quarter and first nine months of 2013, approximately 3.1 million and 3.3 million, respectively, of stock options, performance share units and restricted stock awards were excluded from the computations of diluted earnings per share, as their inclusion would be anti-dilutive. For the third quarter and first nine months of 2012, approximately 3.1 million and 3.3 million, respectively, of stock options, performance share units and restricted stock awards were excluded from the computations of diluted earnings per share as their inclusion would be anti-dilutive.
