5. Investment, Real Estate and Other Assets

We sold a 50% undivided interest in a portion of our corporate campus on September 9, 2020 as further discussed in Note 9 to the consolidated financial statements. As of December 31, 2020, we reported the retained interest as investment in real estate and reclassified our real estate to investment, real estate and other assets on our accompanying consolidated balance sheets.

In 2016, we purchased 10% of the outstanding common stock and associated voting rights of a privately held Colorado corporation for $10.0 million. We are accounting for this investment at fair value, but have utilized the practical expedient guidance to record at cost. As part of our initial investment, we have the right, but not the obligation, to purchase additional shares. If we elect not to utilize our right to purchase additional shares or transfer these rights to another party by certain deadlines, we may be required to surrender and forfeit our existing stock ownership.
