[Page 32] Technology Growth Portfolio GOAL/APPROACH The portfolio seeks capital appreciation. To pursue this goal, the portfolio invests primarily in the stocks of growth companies of any size that Dreyfus believes to be leading producers or beneficiaries of technological innovation. Up to 25% of the portfolio's assets may be invested in foreign securities. The portfolio' s stock investments may include common stocks, preferred stocks and convertible securities. In choosing stocks, the portfolio looks for sectors in technology that are expected to outperform on a relative scale. The more attractive sectors are overweighted; those sectors with less appealing prospects are underweighted. Among the sectors evaluated are those that develop, produce or distribute products or services in the computer, semi-conductor, electronics, communications, healthcare, biotechnology, computer software and hardware, electronic components and systems, network and cable broadcasting, telecommunications, defense and aerospace, and environmental sectors. In fact, the technology sector has been among the most volatile sectors of the stock market. The value of a shareholder's investment in the portfolio will go up and down, sometimes dramatically, which means that shareholders could lose money. Technology companies, especially small-cap technology companies, involve greater risk because their earnings tend to be less predictable, their share prices more volatile and their securities less liquid than larger, more established companies. The prices of securities purchased in initial public offerings or shortly thereafter may be very volatile. Dreyfus has engaged its affiliate, Newton Capital Management Limited, to serve as sub-investment adviser for the European Equity Portfolio and the Japan Portfolio.
