[1] The consolidated balance sheets include assets of consolidated variable interest entities (“VIEs”) that can only be used to settle obligations and liabilities of the VIEs for which creditors do not have recourse to the Company. At June 30, 2017 and December 31, 2016, total assets of the consolidated VIEs were $698 million and $747 million (including accrued interest receivable of $2.3 million and $2.5 million), respectively, and total liabilities were $688 million and $731 million (including accrued interest payable of $2.2 million and $2.4 million), respectively.
