DRDGOLD RESPONDS TO DME STATEMENT RE NORTH WEST OPERATIONS SEISMIC EVENT
INQUIRY
Johannesburg, South Africa. 17 October 2005. DRDGOLD Limited (JSE: DRD;
NASDAQ: DROOY; ASX: DRD; POM SoX: DRD)
is aware of today’s media statement
released by the Department of a Minerals and Energy relating to the inquiry into the seismic
event that occurred on 9 March at DRDGOLD’s North West Operations.

DRDGOLD denies the correctness of the conclusions drawn by the Department from the
testimony presented at the inquiry.

No evidence was presented to support the conclusion that there was:
  any shortage of support required to make areas safe;

  inadequate ventilation; or
  poor management control, as alleged.

Although gullies were long, they were maintained as safely as far as reasonably practicable,
as required by law.

There is, therefore, no basis for imposing any administrative fine on the owner of the mine.

Furthermore, as far as the nature of the event is concerned, Dr Kijko, a seismologist with the
Council for Geoscience, testified that it was “very unlikely” that the event was caused by
active mining conducted by the mine or by regional mining in the area.

DRDGOLD’s conclusion, therefore, is that the event was a natural earthquake.
