Explanatory Note

This Post-Effective Amendment No. 164 under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the “Securities Act”) (Amendment No. 165 under the Investment Company Act of 1940, as amended (the “1940 Act”)) to the registration statement on Form N-1A (the “Registration Statement”) of Vanguard Index Funds (the “Trust”) is being filed pursuant to paragraph (b)(1)(iii) of Rule 485 under the Securities Act solely for the purpose of delaying, until January 19, 2018, the pending effective date of the Trust’s 163rd Post-Effective Amendment. By way of further background:

  • Post-Effective Amendment No. 163 was filed under Rule 485(b)(1)(iii) on November 22, 2017, for the sole purpose of extending to December 22, 2017, the then-pending effective date of Post-Effective Amendment No. 162.
  • Post-Effective Amendment No. 162 was filed under Rule 485(b)(1)(iii) on October 26, 2017, for the sole purpose of extending to November 25, 2017, the then-pending effective date of Post- Effective Amendment No. 161.
  • Post-Effective Amendment No. 161 was filed under Rule 485(b)(1)(iii) on September 28, 2017, for the sole purpose of extending to October 27, 2017, the then-pending effective date of Post- Effective Amendment No. 160.
